Eddie, the youngest of 5 children, studied in Cirebon and Gorontalo (Minahassa). Being the last one to leave home, to support his mother, at 18yrs he started a career with the Dutch KPM (shipping company) in Indonesia. He met Wilhelmina Lefina in Gorontalo where they fell in love. Family from both sides did not like their marriage, so they eloped to Surabaya to get married there. He built a career from an office boy until eventually becoming the Head Agent for East Indonesia with the KPM (the only non-expat to achieve that feat). Eventually he started Indonesia's first national shipping company MKSS (Maskapai Kapal Sulawesi Selatan) in 1948 while on loan to the Indonesian Government. In 1959 he worked as a director in W-Africa for another Dutch shipping company. He was a hard working person and his heart was in music (singing, piano, guitar, ukelele) and tap dancing, besides playing tennis and bridge. As a young man of 18 he almost eloped by ship with an entertainment group from the USA that visited Batavia. He got caught and dragged off the boat... Eddie 93yrs old in 2003 still lived in Cinere, Jakarta, Indonesia. enjoying his comfortable pension being taken care of by 2 in-house nurses. | |
