Joseph was one of the early pioneers in Asia where he worked as a civil engineer. He traveled all over Asia and built bridges, railways as well as owned and operated goldmine concessions. He married Sarah Jeannette van Loon, got divorced, and later married Isabella Walsen-Tambajong in the Minahassa. He was a bon vivant who loved fast living. He had the largest butterfly collection in Asia, which he donated to the British Museum of Natural History in Hong Kong. And he also had the complete postage stamp collection of China, which he later donated to the King of Belgium when he visited Hong Kong. Joseph also was an excellent piano player with his heart in classical music. The man lived hard and had an agressive personality, was rich but loved gambling, drink and women. After the divorce from Isabella he died alone in Surabaya, Indonesia. | |||||
