The Walsen-Tambajong Family

By: Boet Walsen (translation: Roderick C. Wahr

Introduction

A copy of a story of Boet Walsen about my father's Minahasa background.

Lopana, 28th June 1986

A few items about the family WALSEN-TAMBAJONG.
Vague history prelude:

The French Revolution. French notables fled abroad.
Among them there was a certain ....?? (Balcienne ???).
Via England he went to the East and arrived in Banda. Dug himself in the blooming clove trade. Took on a Dutch name and chose one which generated associations with ballrooms and of panting machines, namely the name WALSEN.
Begot offspring with a Bandanese beauty. One of them traveled off and on through the Archipelago and at one time arrived in Menado.

The English temporary government in the Dutch East Indies under Rafles.
An english sea captain by the name of .... Bowie, traveled off and on between the islands.

Had an amorous adventure with a Balinese beauty who gave him a beautiful little daughter. He was crazy about her and often took her with him on his journeys. At the age of 17 years her father brought her to Menado which brought about a turning point in her life, because that was the time that Walsen Jr. from Banda (see above) was present in Menado.
Fate decided that they were meant for each other. Love at first sight with all its consequences.
The French-Bandanese combination married the English-Balinese product and produced a.o.: Charles William Walsen (born ....., died .....).
Now we have come closer to home.
However, first a little bit of Minahasa history.

Laatzar Tambajong
Latzar Tambajong

The Minahasa was divided in districts with a minahasa head for each district who carried the title of Mayoor.
The District Heads can be regarded as Minahasa nobility because these families, generation after generation, functioned as heads of government.
A few names: Pelenkahu, Waworuntu, Warokka, Runtuwene, Tambajong.

Now we aim our sights at the name Tambajong.
Laatzar (Lazarus) Tambajong, son of Kepala Balak Benjamin Tambajong (ancestor) and a younger brother of Majoor Jurian Tambajong, was Majoor of District Tombasian-Amoerang.
He had a.o. a daughter by the name of Isabella Benjamina Tambajong (born ...., died ....)

Back to Charles William Walsen.

Hij was the agent of a shipping company in Amoerang and at the same time a ropewinding factory which produced hawsers for shipping from the idjoek-filament of the aren-palm. (ijuk, in the Minahasa called gumutu).

Charles Walsen (opa Tjalie) got acquainted with the beautiful Isabella Benjamina Tambajong, became heavily influenced by her charms, obtained a charming response, there developed a sparkling, exuberant young love that didn't shrink for anything. This strength was necessary because dark clouds were accumulating which threatened to pulverize these youthful love ties.

Benjamina namely, according to adat (local custom), was destined to be married to Majoor Pelenkahu (district head of Tonsea) in Air Madidi.

But Providence had decided otherwise.

Love for his daughter made the stringent Majoor Laatzar Tambajong (te-te Latzar) succumb for her choice (luckily so, otherwise I would not have existed).
